		<description>GIF Queen Archive&#38;nbsp;The Evolution of my GIF-making Career
And just for the record, I pronounce with a hard G.

For nearly a decade, I was the sole creator of the animated GIFs published by NBCUniversal for the majority of its primetime programming. I produced hundreds of GIFs every week, earning me the affectionate nickname "GIF Queen”.
It all started with Tumblr. The first GIF I ever made came from a scene in Sofia Coppola's 2006 film Marie Antoinette. I posted it, and almost instantly, I was hooked. At the time, I had no idea what went into creating a truly beautiful, high-quality GIF. I also never imagined that just a few years later, I'd be making GIFs all day professionally.

In February 2016, I joined NBC as a digital designer. My days were spent watching shows like Chicago Fire, This Is Us, and The Good Place, creating animated GIFs for the marketing and social media teams across nearly every series in NBC's primetime lineup. I also produced GIFs for live broadcasts and special events, including Hairspray Live!, the Golden Globe Awards, The Voice, and America's Got Talent.

When my parents asked what I did for a living, I told them the truth: I got paid to watch TV.
Obviously, my job was more than that. I started learning about all the different types of GIFs and what made each one special. There were evergreen moments, action/reaction GIFs, cinemagraphs, quotes, designed GIFs, stickers, memes, and campaign pieces. Each style had its own purpose, and I began to understand how each format could tell a story and connect with audiences in its own way.

But hey, my knowledge and passion for pop culture and current trends did come in handy!


Evergreen, aka Action &#38;amp; Reaction&#38;nbsp;GIFs
These were the bread-and-butter GIFs, the moments everyone wanted to share. My job was to spot the scenes people would immediately text to a friend, repost on Tumblr, or tweet with the perfect caption. Whether it was a dramatic first kiss, a hilarious reaction shot, or an unforgettable TV moment, I was always looking for the scenes that would live far beyond the episode itself.

CinemagraphsA cinemagraph is a hybrid format combining a still photograph with localized, repeating video motion. While the majority of the image remains completely frozen, a specific element (like pouring coffee or fluttering hair) loops continuously, creating a transfixing visual effect.

The next step was bringing my design skills and GIF-making skills together to create GIFs that felt a little more special. By combining typography, motion, and visual elements, I could tell a story, capture a feeling, and make each GIF more than just a clip from a show.

This was the beginning of experimenting with how design and GIF-making could work together. I was learning the possibilities, testing what resonated, and figuring out what could—and couldn’t—be shared on the social media channels of a company as large and influential as NBC.

Campaign Support GIFsGIFs created to support the bigger social media campaigns for each show. I worked within the specific look and feel of each series, following its design and brand guidelines while finding ways to make the GIFs feel fun, engaging, and shareable.

Rio Olympics Torch Relay GIF Series
My first big GIF design project was for the 2016 Rio Olympics. The campaign brought together NBC primetime shows, including classics like 30 Rock, to build excitement for the Games being broadcast on the network. Various characters and TV personalities were featured holding an Olympic torch, often animated to look like they were passing it along the route toward lighting the Olympic flame. The GIFs were posted on each show’s social media accounts, then “passed the torch” by tagging another show’s account and keeping the chain going across the network.

When I first started, the social marketing teams would choose the moments and quotes from each episode for me to turn into GIFs. But as I spent more time at NBC and got to know the shows, the characters, and the audience, I earned the team’s trust and was given more creative freedom to find the moments I knew people would love to share. This is truly when I became the “GIF Queen”.

Self-Initiated This Is Us GIFsSome of my favorite GIFs that I’ve made were often began as self-initiated projects. As a fan of the show This Is Us, I loved coming up with ideas that used visual storytelling to bring memorable moments and characters to life in a fun, engaging way.I created this GIF set inspired a scene in season 2, episode 5, where we get our first little glimpse into the character Jack’s military service during the Vietnam War. Knowing the next season would explore this part of his story further, I created this GIF diptych as an emotional teaser that hints at his past and where his character’s story was headed. Using a line of dialogue from the Season 1 finale and a double-exposure effect, I wanted the GIFs to capture the mood of Jack’s character and the way he carried so much beneath the surface while always trying to be a good person and father.

I further adapted the look and feel of these GIFs into a new set featuring the show’s main characters, highlighting Jack’s relationship with his three children.

These map GIFs were inspired by episodes where the characters explored different cities. I originally self-initiated the Philadelphia map GIF, including scenes from the episode that highlighted iconic spots around the city. Some of the locations featured were places I had personally visited and loved, which made me especially excited to bring the idea to life as a GIF. After the Philadelphia GIF was well received, I was later asked to create a second map GIF for a later episode that featured the characters visiting different locations around New York City.

		<description>Travel Guide ZinesPersonal ProjectChicago, Fall 2024Whenever I am about to go on a trip—local or international—doing research is my favorite part of the planning process. Looking up unique places to see, foods to try, and live events to attend is adds more excitement about my taking my next adventure. However, all this research ends up turning my Google Maps app into a chaotic mess (see below).

 Rather than letting all this research remain a mess on my phone, I organize all of my findings in a printed zine for me to peruse and guide me as I immerse myself in a new place. Designed and printed by me, for me.
For the Chicago edition, I designed the cover with a scattered selection of pinback buttons highlighting different aspects of Chicago history and culture sourced from the archives of the Busy Beaver Button Museum. Their collection includes buttons from as early as 1888 spanning different categories from political to innovative one-of-a-kind pieces. The museum is housed inside of the design studio and button factory at Busy Beaver Button Co., and located in the Logan Square neighborhood of Chicago.&#38;nbsp;

I included a spread listing the various pieces of art I wanted to be sure to check out while visiting the Art Institue of Chicago, which holds so many long-admired artworks including the miniature furniture rooms, Frank Lloyd Wright glass windows, and the iconic Seurat painting, A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte, made even more well known by being featured in the classic scene in Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, a favorite film from my childhood.

		<description>The Six Day Bike Rider&#38;nbsp; (In Progress)Personal Project
I first began researching into my grandfather’s past as a cyclist in six-day bicycle races—the forgotten Jazz Age sport—after stumbling upon a blog post that mentioned his name in a story about a brawl breaking out during a race. I never got the chance to meet my grandfather, but grew up on stories about how he loved cycling, along with hints that he’d once had an amateur career in the sport. The image of my grandfather, a small Armenian man, throwing punches in the middle of a race track stuck with me, sparking a long-term search into a part of my grandfather’s past he had kept mostly hidden, even from his family.
After years of collecting personal photographs, newspaper clippings, race statistics from nearly a century ago, and any other information I could find about this forgotten sport, I gathered all my findings into a small paperback book so these pieces of history could exist in physical form.

This proposed film festival is a celebration of the San Fernando Valley, from it's vast suburbs, to its vacant storefronts that bring up memories of its past glory. SFV Drive-In Film Festival aims to honestly, lovingly, and humbly represent the Valley. Films will be hosted drive-in style, in homage to the historic and long gone yet not forgotten drive-in theaters throughout Valley. The venue is the once bustling shopping hub Valley Plaza.

Also included is a festival catalogue and souvenior book, featuring images and ephemera highlighting various special locations in the San Fernando Valley, along with film schedules, plot and cast summaries, and&#38;nbsp; background of intended special guests to the festival, Valley locals and visionaries.

Un—titled. A Cindy Sherman ProjectExhibit Catalogue and Installation, 2014Un—titled. is an exhibition catalogue that explores the ideas of identity, self-representation, and feminist theory through the self portraits of artist Cindy Sherman. The catalogue examines the commentary of Sherman's work, her influences, and legacy with Sherman finally getting her own chance to explain at the end of the book.

The catalogue is accompanied by an interactive installation that introduces the viewer to Sherman herself, through her inspirations of cinema, changing women's roles, and the art of transformation. Three interactive screens engage the viewer in various content, based on an interview Sherman did with director and Sherman fan John Waters.

 In 2003, Rolling Stone released a list of the 100 Greatest Guitarists of All-Time and only two women were included. They released a revised list that was compiled by a panel in 2011 and, again, only two women were featured. Women in Rock is an interactive installation that highlights six female guitarists that have made a large impact on music. The women featured are Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Peggy Jones, Nancy Wilson, Lita Ford, Kim Gordon, and Annie Clark.

Aimed at celebrating people and their obsessions, from director Stanley Kubrick's futile yet comprehensive obsession to bring Napoleon to the screen, artist Yayoi Kusama and her obsession with dots, and Dutch historian that lives like it was the 1930s. The iPad platform allows for the user to delve deeper into each of these obsessions, using all types of interactive media including photos, videos, and sounds.

This Trojan redesign celebrates the erotic duality of masculinity and femininity, an equal experience between partners to explore the spontaneity of sex, to dismantle the limiting categories by which society defines sexuality. Trojan aims to explode the clichés and fears that hold people back from developing their greatest sexual and sensual potential, yet always being assured they are being smart and safe without sacrificing being sexy.

FREAKS is a quarterly cult magazine, featuring articles about different cult films and television shows and cult fin culture. It celebrates a types of media that are often not well known or or even forgotten. The title of the magazine is in homage of one of the earliest and most iconic cult films, Tod Browning’s 1932 classic Freaks, one of the first cult films.
The first issue of FREAKS, entitled Young and Stupid, is about the representation of youth in cult media, mostly around the high school age and teenhood. The second issue of Freaks, entitled More Human than Human, is about anthropomorphism, or objects given human qualities such as robots and cyborgs. The Young and Stupid issue was displayed in the Art Center Student Gallery in 2012.
